Roller Shades — Frequently Asked Questions

MEASURING & FITTING

Measure the inside width of the window opening at the top, middle, and bottom. Use the narrowest measurement and deduct ¼ inch so the shade operates freely. For height, measure from the top of the opening to the sill — and measure on both sides, since windows are rarely perfectly square; if the difference is more than 1/2”, outside mount will usually give a better finish. For roller shade height, you may want to add more. Most manufacturers apply their own deduction; confirm with your supplier before ordering.

Measure the exact width and height you want the shade to cover, adding at least 1.5 to 3” on each side to block light gaps. For height, extend 3 to 6” above the window frame and go down to the sill or floor depending on your preference. Order the shade at these exact dimensions with no deductions needed.

Inside mount gives a clean, built-in look but requires a minimum depth (usually 2–3”) and shows light gaps at the sides. Outside mount covers trim and gaps better, great for blackout needs or shallow windows. If your frame depth is under 2”, outside mount is the safer choice. Inside mount has the option of adding side channels to block the light gap. This achieves much better total blackout vs. an outside mount, which still has light leaks.

FABRIC & LIGHT CONTROL

Blackout fabrics block virtually all light — ideal for bedrooms and media rooms. Light-filtering diffuses sunlight while maintaining privacy during the day, great for living areas. Sheer fabrics allow the most light in, offering minimal privacy but a soft, airy look.

The fabric itself is 100% opaque, but light can still seep in around the sides and top of an inside-mounted shade. For true room darkening, pair blackout fabric with a cassette valance, side channels, or choose outside mount with generous overlap.

The openness factor (e.g., 1%, 3%, 5%, 10%) describes the percentage of the fabric that is open weave. A lower percentage means less glare, more UV protection, and better privacy from outside, but a darker interior view. A higher percentage provides better outward visibility and more natural light.

OPERATION & CONTROLS

Corded: Traditional and low-cost, but no longer allowed in homes in Canada due to safety risks with young children (Corded Window Coverings Regulations, SOR/2019-97). Cordless spring: Push up or pull down on the bottom rail; simple and safe. Motorized: Battery-powered or hardwired; can integrate with smart-home systems. Wand pull: There are various types that pull precisely and quickly and can have a slim profile.

Corded shades pose a strangulation risk. For homes with children under 6 or pets, choose cordless or motorized options. All corded products sold in Canada must meet Health Canada’s SOR/2019-97 (and, where applicable, ANSI/WCMA) safety standards — check that yours do.

A small motor replaces the roller tube mechanism and is powered either by a rechargeable battery pack or a hardwired connection. You control the shade via a remote, wall switch, or smartphone app. Many motorized shades integrate with platforms like Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and SmartThings. For integration with Smart Home systems like Lutron, Control4 or Crestron, an additional hub is needed.

INSTALLATION

Most installs need a drill, 3/16” drill bit, screwdriver, level, tape measure, and pencil. Brackets and screws are typically included. For drywall installs without a stud, use wall anchors rated for the weight of your shade. Alternatively, consider having it professionally installed.

A standard single shade takes between 15 to 30 minutes once you have your tools ready. Multiple windows or motorized installs take longer. First-timers should budget extra time for measuring brackets and ensuring level alignment.

Yes, ceiling mount is a common option for skylights, sloped windows, or a recessed look. Most brackets are universal to allow either wall or ceiling installation. Check your product specifications, as not all shades support this configuration.

CARE & MAINTENANCE

For regular dust, use a dry microfibre cloth or duster with the shade fully lowered. For light stains, dab (don’t rub) with a lightly damp cloth and mild soap — avoid soaking the fabric. Blackout and vinyl-backed fabrics handle moisture better than open-weave solar fabrics. Never machine wash or submerge.

Uneven rolling is usually caused by the shade being installed slightly off-level, or by the tension spring needing adjustment. Re-check that both brackets are at the same height. For spring tension, fully lower the shade, remove it from the brackets, and manually roll it up 2–3 turns before reinstalling.

With normal use, quality roller shades last 10+ years. Direct, intense sun exposure can fade or weaken fabric faster. Solar shades are more UV-resistant by design. Motorized shades have battery/motor lifespans to consider; most batteries need to be recharged once or twice a year depending on usage frequency.
