Custom Honeycomb Shades Frequently Asked Questions
Product Basics
What are honeycomb (cellular) shades?
Honeycomb shades — also called cellular shades — are window treatments made of pleated fabric with air pockets shaped like honeycombs. Those cells trap air and act as insulation, keeping rooms warmer in winter and cooler in summer. They are available in single-cell, double-cell, and triple-cell configurations, each offering progressively more insulation.
What is the difference between single, double, and triple cell?
- Single cell: One layer of air pockets. Most affordable and best suited for mild climates.
- Double cell: Two stacked layers for better insulation. The most popular choice for most homes.
- Triple cell: Three layers for maximum energy efficiency. Ideal for extreme climates or high-end builds.
What light-control options are available?
- Sheer / light-filtering: Softens sunlight while maintaining daytime privacy and views.
- Room-darkening: Blocks most light; small amounts may enter at edges. Suitable for most bedrooms.
- Blackout: Maximum light block. Ideal for nurseries, home theatres, or shift workers.
Measuring & Ordering
How do I measure for inside mount?
Measure the inside width of the window opening at the top, middle, and bottom — use the smallest of the three. Then measure the height on the left, center, and right and use the largest. Round to the nearest ⅛ inch and enter those exact dimensions; we apply deductions automatically to ensure smooth operation.
How do I measure for outside mount?
Decide how far beyond the frame you want the shade to extend on each side (typically 1½–3 inches per side for best light block). Add those amounts to the opening width for your total width. For height, measure from where the headrail will sit to your desired bottom point, usually 2–4 inches below the sill. Enter the total finished dimensions — no deductions are applied for outside mount.
What are the minimum and maximum sizes?
Minimum width is 9 inches; minimum height is 6 inches. Maximum width is 96 inches for a single shade (widths over 72 inches may require a center support bracket). Maximum height is 120 inches. For unusually large openings, a pair of shades side-by-side is often the best solution.
Can I order a sample before committing?
Yes — free fabric samples are available for most collections. We strongly recommend ordering samples so you can evaluate colour, fabric weight, and light diffusion in your actual space. Because every shade is made to order, we cannot accept returns based on colour preference.
Operation & Features
What lift systems are available?
- Cordless: Push up or pull down on the bottom rail. Safest for homes with children or pets and the most popular choice.
- Continuous cord loop: A single loop cord for easy one-handed operation. Good for tall or wide shades.
- Motorized / smart home: Battery or hardwired motor with remote, app, or voice control (Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit compatible).
- Top-down / bottom-up (TDBU): Lets you lower from the top and raise from the bottom independently for simultaneous light and privacy control — ideal for street-level rooms, bathrooms, or anywhere you want daylight without an outside view.
Are cordless shades child-safe?
Yes. In Canada, cordless window coverings are the standard set by Health Canada's Corded Window Coverings Regulations (SOR/2019-97), and cordless shades are additionally recommended by the Window Covering Safety Council for any home with children under 6 or pets (meeting current ANSI/WCMA A100.1 safety standards). If you prefer corded operation, enclosed cord systems with a breakaway connector are also available and must meet SOR/2019-97 to be sold here.
Installation & Care
How difficult is installation?
Most homeowners find honeycomb shades straightforward to install. Each shade ships with a headrail, mounting brackets, hardware, and illustrated instructions. An inside-mount install typically takes 10–15 minutes per window with a drill and level. For motorized shades requiring hardwired power, we recommend a licensed electrician.
How do I clean honeycomb shades?
For routine maintenance, use a soft brush vacuum attachment on low suction, or blow out the cells with compressed air. For spot cleaning, dab gently with a damp cloth and mild soap — do not saturate the fabric. Avoid steam cleaners and never immerse the shade in water, as this can distort the cell structure and damage the fabric coating.
What warranty is included?
All custom honeycomb shades come with a limited lifetime warranty on fabric and cell structure under normal residential use. Operating components (cords, lifts, motors) are covered for 3 years. Warranty does not cover damage from improper installation, misuse, or excessive moisture exposure. Motorized systems also carry the motor manufacturer’s separate warranty.
